Hello, I am a certified credit couselor with a nonprofit organizaiton and wish to answer your question.
You can check your credit report as often as you wish. You are entitled to one free credit report from one of the agencies every 12 months. No points are deducted. You can check www.annualcreditreport.com, For a time you were able to get all 3 reports for free, try it its worth a shot.
The only time points are deducted, by checking your credit report, is if you are applying for credit or loans. However be careful. If you apply for credit with multiple companies your credit score can be affected.
An example is buying a car. It is not unusual to go to a dealership with a 700 an come out with 650. The reason. They submit your request for your car loan through several banks hoping you will get approved. Everytime that happens your score goes down. That is why you want to be preapproved through your bank before shoopping.
Of course there are several other elements that affect your score. So check away. It cost about 8.00 per report, to get your score there is an sdditional 5.00 charge. This prices may be a little higher but they are in the ball park.
If you have any qustions about credit, budgeting, or strategies feel to e-mail and I will do what I can to help you out. hanketroy@yahoo.com
How often can you check your credit report? and are points deducted when you check it.?
A very misunderstood question. Checking your own credit does not deduct points from your score. Perhaps at some point in time it did, but these days it does not. Having lenders pull your credit score will typically deduct a few points each time, however you can quicly earn those pts back. So as long as you are not applying for 10 different credit lines in one month, you will not notice any major effects from that either.
