If I deposit a check and it bounces, does MY credit rating take a hit?

I am annoyed at the person that gave it to me because I got hit with a fee but I am more concerned about my stellar credit than that $10. It%26#039;s not my fault the check bounced!!

You act like you know so much about your credit. You should know that your checking acount balance, and transactions have nothing to do with your credit. Learn more on the subject, please.

I am a realtionship banker for a local bank here in Colorado.

Not to scare you but, yes it may. Only if you are a frequent overdrafter though...regardless of who wrote the check you or another party, you take the hit generally in your account. and were probably charged the NSF Fee, and a return check fee. That is why it is a good idea to wait until a check clears before writing checks or spending the money on a check you deposit. Depending on if the routing number tells us bankers if it%26#039;s a local or non local check. Regulation CC requires that if you are NSF more than 6 times in any 6 month period or less, you qualify as a frequent overdrafter and may as a result be reported to Chexsystems or another financial reporting agency, which then appears on your credit report.

All that being said, i wouldn%26#039;t worry about it if your good at keeping your checkbook in balance and never overdraw and for 10.00, your bank probably paid the check for you, and only charged you a minimal fee.

No, not at all.

If I deposit a check and it bounces, does MY credit rating take a hit?

not unless your account becomes negative and you never fix it

I know what you mean, as I%26#039;ve had the same thing happen to me before, too. It doesn%26#039;t seem fair that you are hit with a fee as I would think the fees should only be collected from the person who wrote the check. I guess you have to be careful about who you accept checks from these days. Same thing happens, though, for instance if you write a check to your landlord for rent and it bounces - your landlord%26#039;s bank will charge him a fee AND your bank will charge you a fee.
