If an employer does a background check, will it affect my credit score?

If a current employer does a background check, which may include my credit history, will it affect my credit score? Thanks!

It depends on how they check your credit. If they simply pull it, like you are applying for a loan, then it will count as an inquiry. Depending on your credit, this may or may not hurt it.

Many employers belong to background checking services and they don%26#039;t show up as an inquiry but they will show up as a commercial service request. This does not affect your score at all.

ANY credit check adversly effects your credit rating!!!

(Which pisses me off NO END!!)

When you say background check, are you talking about a criminal background?

That%26#039;s totally different and doesn%26#039;t go on your credit report.

If they check your CREDIT, then yes, that drops your score. The only time a credit inquiry doesn%26#039;t hurt you is if you did not authorize it, and when the credit bureaus run your credit (such as when you request a credit report directly from the credit bureau).
