I have searched online for a free credit report, but have not found an actually free detailed report. The reason I ask is I messed up in initially paying back my student loans, and I know it has affected my credit rating, but not sure to what degree. I was apporved to lease a car, get a cell phone, but declined for a credit card, so I would like to know why.

Your credit rating, as your question implies, is not free. And, in order to obtain correct scores you need to go to each individual credit bureau for the correct score they are reporting. I have found independent sources to reflect inaccurate credit scores.
Law makers are in current discussion to set costs for aquiring credit score information. They are discussing amounts of $5 to $7 per score per agency. This would indicate a cost of $15 to $21 for all three scores.
Free reports, Scores are not free
