Your credit will hurt if your check bounces. If you put a stop payment, the company reports that to credit bureau that you did not make payment, it will hurt you. It does not look like that is the case here.

Well, if they report you, yes. Did you talk to them before you stopped payment? There%26#039;s a chance they%26#039;ll send you to collections. You should try to figure out a way to solve this issue that won%26#039;t potentially bite you in the rear at a later date.
Good luck!

Not unless you were under a contractual agreement with them that is binding. Remember to report bad businesses to the better business bureau, too. They may sue for payment if they feel adequately entitled to the money. They could be trying to bilk you.

Next time, consider placing a mechanic%26#039;s lien (or builder%26#039;s lien) on the company that did not finish the work.

Why is a person paying for an estimate? Is the estimate the product rendered?
In the event that the product is the estimate, you would have to pay for it. In the event the job was something else and the estimate was part of the job, it is still your expense. If the estimate is made, the work on the job not done - you owe nothing.

It is a crime . . you should have contacted the company before stopping payment . . In our county if you stop payment then it is treated the same as a hot check. Contact the company and explain why you stopped payment . . if you would have done this first they may have held the check until your estimate was completed. Try to work it out with the company before it becomes a problem. Don%26#039;t bother with the BBB they really don%26#039;t do anything, I%26#039;ve been though it with a plumber who is still a member of the BBB with no reports , even thought we ended up sueing the company and recieving restitution.

Depends on your credit, if you got really good credit then it might not be worth playing games over $117.
As a business person I had almost the exact same situation happen to me last year from a lady who thought she was being smart with me for putting a stop payment on a check for $100.
We installed a satellite Dish for her and charged her $99 for the installation, 3 days later she called us to cancel and wanted her money back and we told her no since the $99 was for labor and was non-refundable. She thought she was being smart and put a stop payment on my check, I turned it over to collections and since she had excellent credit they starightened her out really quick. Not only did I get my $99 out of her, the collection agency forced her to pay an additional 30% for their collection efforts and then she was out another $25 she had to pay her bank to stop payment on the check.
Her choice was either pay the money or be reported to the 3 major credit reporting companies.
Keep in mind this only works with people who have good credit, if the person has bad credit or doesn%26#039;t care then there is not as much leverage there collecting a debt.
I would call the company and try to work it out, court may be an option but im pretty sure stopping payment on a check will get some action. However when they complete the Job, just be pre-paired to pay them their money!
