Regarding NC (Fayetteville) Room was reserved via credit card, but they charged at check-in..WHY?

The reservation was done thru a travel agency...When I arrived they wanted payment up front (This is a national chain btw)..This particular hotel even refused the confirmation paper that states payment do at check-out. I called many in that area, they wont even hold a room for you unless that credit card has available credit to hold the room.....but what was funny is the high priced ones did the norm, payment due at check-out, room held regardless of credit available on CC... What happened to southern hospitality? THEY DO NOT DO THIS UP NORTH!

They actually swipe your card at check-in to verify available credit. The card is then actually billed at check-out. In the last 2 years I stayed at about 100 different hotels and it was all pretty much the same (most in NC, by-the-way)
