Some of the companies sell your information, or use your information themselves to offer you other products or services.
The alternative and much safer option is to talk to your bank.
Depending on which bank you go to, Wells Fargo and Washington Mutual come to mind, will give you a credit report for free. Home mortgage divisions of banks also give out free consulations on your credit status and whether you will qualify for a home mortgage, at no cost.
